Malachite bead is made from Malachite stone, which is a carbon carbonate with bands of two or more shades of green throughout. Malachite can be easily scratched and is very fragile. Washing Malachite will remove its protective polish and can be damaged by acids. Malachite is derived from the Greek word “malache” (herb). The malachite bead is actually made up of copper, with the amount of water in the specimen affecting the intensity of the color. More water will make the green lighter; less water makes the green more intense. Total absence of water will make Malachite bead black. Legend says that Malachite bead is a cure for convulsions, and has been used as a talisman for children to ward off evil sprits. Holding Malachite bead is said to calm the nervous system.. It is found in Zaire, Chile, Australia, France, England and Arizona. |
